How to set up a Tempo Kids account

Setting up a Tempo Kids account is simple and only takes about 5 minutes if you already have a Personal account.

If you don’t have a Personal account, you’ll need to open one before setting up a Kids account. Our guide How to set up a Tempo Personal account will help you get started.

What you need before you start

Before you set up a Kids account, we recommend you have on hand the following for the child:

  • Kids account email address (not one you use for your Tempo account)

  • Identification (their birth certificate or passport)

  • Physical address

  • Bank account in their name

  • Their IRD number

Step 1: Create a Kids account

To get started all you need to do is the following:

  • Tap on the ‘Me’ tab in the app

  • Tap on ‘Open a Kids account’

  • Fill out the following details:

    • Choose relationship to child

    • Enter child’s first name

    • Add Kids account email address*

    • Create a password

  • Verify their email address

  • You’ll then be logged out of your account, and logged into the child’s account to finish setting it up.

*For logging in only – all important account-related information is sent to the email address of the adult who manages the Kids account

We always have some kind of promotion running – you can find out what’s currently available on our promotions and T&Cs page.

Step 2: Find their investor type

The next step is answering a few questions to find out what investor type you’d like for the child: cautious, balanced, or adventurous.

Step 3: Choose a goal

Set a direction for the child from one of our goal options. Let us know if you want them to invest towards an amount or a date. Tell us how much and how often you’d like to invest and we’ll show you how long it’ll take to reach or how much they’ll end up with.

Step 4: Get advice

Next we’ll ask you to read and acknowledge our Tempo Advice Service (TAS) document and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) on behalf of the child. The TAS provides details about our advice and how our fees work. The PDS has information about our funds and investing with us.

We'll then recommend a fund mix (portfolio) for the child. This is based on their investor type, how long you're planning to invest for them or how much you'd like them to end up with, and their goal plan.

Step 5: Confirm their identity

For this next step, you’ll need those documents and details we asked for before you started. We’ll use these to fill out some of the following details to confirm the child’s identity:

  • Choose child’s ID type

  • Enter their ID details

  • Add child’s address

  • Fill in child’s tax details (IRD number, PIR tax rate)

Step 6: Verify via their bank

The final step is to confirm the child’s identity using Akahu and their bank account details. This ensures they are who you say they are and sets the account up to make withdrawals. We’ll ask for one-off access to their name, address, and bank account number. You’ll then go through the following secure steps:

  • Select their bank

  • Connect their bank and follow the instructions

  • Select an account

  • Confirm one-off access

Trouble using Akahu?

If you’re unable to confirm the child’s identity using Akahu, we’ll get in touch to find another way to help you finish setting them up.

Next steps

Welcome to Tempo. You’re now ready to start investing! This is just the beginning, so here are a few simple steps to help you stay consistent, build momentum, and make the most of everything Tempo has to offer.

  • Look out for an email welcoming the child to Tempo with instructions on how to put money towards their goals

  • Stay on track, build more momentum over time, and lessen your decision-making load, by setting up an automatic payment for the child’s goal

  • If you’re interested in opening an account with a partner or family member, you might want to consider setting up a joint account

If you’ve already set up an account, but didn’t apply a code, you can still do so in the ‘Me’ tab of the app.
