Open banking is a secure way for you to share your bank account information with trusted apps like Tempo.
Instead of entering details manually, you approve access directly through your bank. Your bank then securely confirms the information you’ve agreed to share.
How does Tempo use open banking?
Tempo only uses open banking once (via Akahu) to securely confirm that your bank account belongs to you:
Confirm your bank account number
Verify that you’re the account holder
Sets you up to withdraw money from your goal
Here’s how it works:
You select your bank in the Tempo app.
You’re redirected to your bank’s app where you sign in directly.
Your bank asks you to approve the information being shared.
Your bank securely confirms your account details via Akahu.
Is open banking safe?
Yes. We use Akahu, a New Zealand based company, to securely facilitate the connection between Tempo and participating banks. Open banking uses encrypted, bank-level security and is regulated in New Zealand.
Your information is only used to confirm that your bank account belongs to you.
When you connect your account:
You log in directly with your bank – not with Tempo
You approve exactly what information is shared
What are the benefits of using open banking?
Using open banking means:
Faster account setup
Fewer manual documents
A smoother experience
Which banks support open banking?
Open banking is currently supported by:
ANZ
ASB
BNZ
Westpac
Support may expand as more banks adopt the standard.
What if my bank doesn’t support open banking?
If your bank doesn’t yet support open banking, we’ll guide you through an alternative secure verification process via Akahu to confirm your identity using your bank account details.
If you prefer not to use Akahu, you can confirm your identity manually. Tap on ‘Manually confirm identity’ on the ‘Let’s confirm your identity’ screen. Our Customer Support team will help you complete the verification process.
