How do I manually verify my identity?

Updated today

How you verify your identity manually depends on who you bank with. Essentially, it’s the same for every bank unless you bank with BNZ or a non-registered bank. We only keep the information needed to confirm your identity.

Confirming your identity manually takes between one and two working days.

Manual verification using registered banks

Currently, there are 27 registered banks in New Zealand (if you bank with BNZ, follow the instructions for non-registered banks).

Email us a copy of a recent bank statement or proof of account

Please make sure it shows:

  • First and last name

  • Bank account number

Please email us at help@tempo.co.nz.

Make a $1 deposit from that same account

This is a one-time verification that’s automatically refunded.

Follow these steps to make the deposit*:

  1. Go to your online banking.

  2. Select to make a payment.

  3. Search for ‘Tempo’ as a registered payee (Account number: 01-1839-0938488-00).

  4. Enter the amount as $1.

  5. Use these details:

    • Particulars: {Customer Last Name}

Manual verification using BNZ and non-registered banks

If you bank with BNZ or a non-registered bank we'll need a bit more information from you.

Certified copies of your ID

Please email us a certified copy of one of the following documents:

  • New Zealand passport

  • New Zealand driver licence

Certified bank statement

Please send us a certified bank statement or proof of account dated within the last 12 months that includes the following:

  • First and last name

  • Bank account number

Please email these certified documents to help@tempo.co.nz.

Who can certify your documents

Your documents can be certified by a lawyer, teacher, kaumātua, doctor, accountant, Justice of the Peace, court official, or police officer.

On the copies, the certifier needs to declare they're true and accurately represent your identity. They must include the following:

  • Their name

  • Occupation

  • Signature

  • Date of certification (within the last 3 months).

*Steps and terminology may differ from bank to bank. For example, some banks ask you to choose an account to make the payment from first.
